Written in 1921, Six Characters in search of an Author, by Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936), is the story of a theatre rehearsal.  The rehearsal is invaded by six characters who, rejected by their creator, try to convince the company director to stage their lives. In the beginning, the director is upset because of the interruption, but little by little he becomes interested in the unusual situation. The characters invite him to direct their lives, showing that they should deserve a second chance. Thus, they convince him to become an author. The discussions between characters and director constitute a phisosophical analysis of the theatre. Thus, the play is divided between the narration itslef and the para-textual aspects, that gain visibility. Director and characters also build a discussion on the ways to do theatre. The characters, trying to show the director that their lives are real, in relation to the stage, and he defending the relativity of wht´s on stage, takes "real" life as a parametre. So here we find another aspect of the play: it becomes a metalinguistic study of the theatre, the art discussing itself. The way of interpretation proposed by the director is not accepted by the characters. They do not want to be interpreted by the company actors. After all, who could better interpret a character´s life than the character itself?

“'And here´s a family in mourning, dimmed faces as if coming out of a dream. They are the Six Characters looking for an Author and trying to live. They want to immerge into a drama. They are more real than you, director, filthy bungler. They are real and they are proving it...'. It ws with this affirmation that Antonin Artaud saluted in 1923, in Paris, at Comédie des Champs Elysées, the premiere of this text that smashed the theatre´s four false walls like, at that same time, between Cais do Sodré and Campo de Ourique, Pessoa was smashing the identity of poetic voice. Pirandello creates a rigorous theatre, of constant reasoning and internal conflict, he walks up to the anguish of the obscure man who got lost into the tremendous world of his being, of the common man who sits at the border of the road and questions himself in an attempt to understand himself and the world around him."
