Perhaps because the history of São Luiz is made of erasures and new beginnings, to this day the memory of the Theatre is still to be put into writing. We therefore wanted to create a paper edition to mark this moment. São Luiz 125 is the first book to think about this institution and its role. With Vanessa Rato’s edition, a vast and varied suit of authors cast a kaleidoscopic look on 125 years of activity, both retrospective as more historiographic, and also offering a more prospective and speculative point of view. From theatre and dance to music and opera, from cinema to architecture, São Luiz is made of many arts and through all of them it has embeded itself in the city of Lisbon and in the country, throughout the ages. Looking at what São Luiz was and what we want from it for the future, our “manifesto” as we celebrate our 125th anniversary.
