Two concerts to celebrate the Aniversário da Metropolitana (Anniversary of the Metropolitan Orchestra).
The first one is a performance by the Metropolitana Big Band. The Big Band formation, although it has a strong connotation with the music of the North American tradition, particularly jazz, has unique characteristics that have allowed it to encompass the most diverse styles and musical currents. From a ‘crossover’ perspective, there are countless repertoires to choose from. This musical diversity is precisely one of the most valued aspects of music teaching today, and is reflected in the pedagogical projects of schools all over the world, particularly in Europe.
It is in this context that the Metropolitana Big Band project emerged, with two main objectives. Firstly, from a didactic perspective, to give students the experience of working with repertoires that are alternative to those included in the curriculum. Secondly, on a more personal level, to enrich the student’s education as an individual through contact with this same diversity. This academic year, the Metropolitana Big Band is one of the programmes included in the training plan of the Metropolitana Professional School.
For the second one, Joana Carneiro and the Metropolitan meet again for a festive day: the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra performs an orchestral suite where the names of planets emerge as astronomical messengers. The pioneering work by Alan Leo, The Art of Synthesis, inspired Gustav Holst who, in 1916, recreated himself around the idea that the planets of the solar system could influence human personality traits. To close this programme, instead of O Místico (Neptune), the planet Earth takes centre stage. The tone poem Terramoto de Lisboa, by Armando José Fernandes, evokes the 1755 tragedy.
