On 5 May 1821, Napoleon Bonaparte uttered his last words: ‘France, the army, chief of the army, Josephine.’ The former emperor lies dead on his bed on the island of Saint Helena and four rumours are spread about the cause of his death: a commissioned strangulation, deliberate poisoning, natural causes or even an honourable suicide; but the rumours about his last acts are a mystery with four different endings that only one person — his faithful maid — witnessed.
