The Gala Concert of 1st December, also known as the Concert for Portugal or the Restoration Concert, is a project created by José Ribeiro e Castro in 2012, as part of the Movimento 1.º de Dezembro, to celebrate National Independence. Since then, it has become the first official event in the 1st December celebrations in Lisbon. Although the concert was small in its first iterations, since then it has grown and is now performed by the Armed Forces Band, under the baton of various conductors. Dedicated exclusively to Portuguese composers, it pays tribute to the country’s spirit and freedom. In 2024, it debuted at the São Luiz Teatro Municipal with a new format, aiming to become an annual tradition comparable to Vienna’s New Year’s Concert.
