This trilogy begins at the end: Fantasia sem Abrigo (Fantasy without Shelter), which lends its name to the show, Na Porra do Texas e Notícias do Novo Mundo. Along this journey, fate is tempted by an impetuous desire for freedom that travels through different times and spaces. In a roofless house, in a desert or in a vast metropolis, motivations are reversed to provide new meaning to life, love and fear.
I
In Fantasia Sem Abrigo (Homeless Fantasy): two street friends live a life free of commitment. These two vagabonds in velvet cloaks live their lives as a poetic gesture and invite us to imagine that a truly free world is within our reach. They break with the idea that society should be governed by laws – as if they were the solution to all of humanity’s ills.
These two beings, perhaps erratic in today’s eyes, present us with an ethical demand and a bonhomie towards the world that embodies, on stage, Freedom as Poetics and a broader way of living.
II
In Na Porra do Texas (In Fucking Texas): two friends travel to Texas to attend the funeral of another friend with whom they spent their teenage years. There is uncertainty among them as to whether ‘the one whose name cannot be mentioned’ is actually dead or not. Amidst a series of comical and absurd events, these two central characters face a life-threatening danger that intensifies when they hear whales singing… but whales? In fucking Texas?
III
In News from the New World: contrasting forces exist – order and chaos coexist.
Two young lovers struggle to conquer the future in an apocalyptic environment. Meanwhile, the Indifferent One, sitting in his armchair, rejects the idea of an earthly resolution.
In this third and final play, the characters symbolically embody possible behaviours in the face of a fictionalisation of the biblical apocalypse.
The music, in relation to the trilogy, acts directly on the emotional appeal. It creates environments and performative games, sometimes playing a crucial role in the narrative. Marcos Magalhães arranges and conducts this small orchestra of seven musicians, based on works by Donizetti, Banchieri, Webern, Bizet and Bach.
Smoke effects are used in this show and smoking occurs on stage.
