The Festival de Jazz Bernardo Sassetti is an itinerant festival that brings audiences, musicians, teachers and students together. It aims to act on the artist’s behalf in the Portuguese cultural fabric, through training and programming, with a highlight always given to the work left by Bernardo Sassetti. With each edition taking place in a different city in the country, 2024 finally brings the festival to Lisbon, the city where the musician was born and raised. Created by Casa Bernardo Sassetti with the central aim of taking jazz and Bernardo Sassetti’s name all over the country, it has invited national and international musicians to perform in concert over the course of three days, as well as challenging a group to perform a repertoire entirely dedicated to Bernardo Sassetti’s music. The FJBS also wants to encourage musicians to play their own projects, thus honouring the creative freedom that Bernardo Sassetti cherished, valued and which characterised him so much. The weekend of concerts is always preceded by a workshop taught by musicians who perform at the festival, in which the students put together a repertoire with the aim of performing on one of the afternoons in the programme. The Jam Session is the uniting point between all the FJBS activities, with a different trio being invited to perform the opening set each day.
