The Gonçalo Marques Quartet is a contemporary jazz group comprising Gonçalo Marques on trumpet, Jacob Sacks on piano, Masatoshi Kamagushi on double bass and Jeff Williams on drums. They recorded their first album, Linhas, for Porta-Jazz in 2019, and a second, birds and cages, for Robalo in 2024.
Their latest album is openly inspired by the world of Franz Kafka. Both albums were very well received by critics. The group is currently working on a new album. The Quartet’s music involves some prior composition, but treats this material with a degree of fluidity, leaving plenty of scope for improvisation; it is perhaps between these two extremes that the ensemble’s natural language lies.
