For the first time, Pedro Moutinho and Hélder Moutinho share the stage. More than just family ties, this encounter brings together two of the greatest voices in contemporary Fado, each with their own career path and artistic identity. More than just a concert, it is a rare celebration of Fado — where tradition and uniqueness come together in a moment of true distinction.
In traditional fado, the lyrics were, for decades, mostly written by popular authors. From the second half of the 20th century onwards, major names in literature emerged who, although they had not started their careers in this universe, ended up being drawn to it by the voice and sensitivity of performers such as Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, João Braga and Beatriz da Conceição. Among these poets, David Mourão-Ferreira, Pedro Homem de Melo, Alexandre O’Neill, José Carlos Ary dos Santos and Pedro Tamen stand out.
At the end of the 20th century, while traditional authors continued to write lyrics, new creators also began to write for Fado, coming from pop music, rock or traditional Portuguese music. Many were — and continue to be — important voices in contemporary literature, invited to contribute to this living heritage. Among them are Manuela de Freitas, Maria do Rosário Pedreira, Vasco Graça Moura, Amélia Muge and João Monge.
Currently, there continues to be a steady stream of new artists dedicated to Fado — some of them fado singers who compose their own songs. At the same time, there are authors invited to enter the ‘ghetto’ of Lisbon song, challenging the conventions of the genre, from imagery to themes. In this context, there is one essential detail: here they are not called lyricists, but Fado Poets — or simply poets.
In this show, Pedro Moutinho and Hélder Moutinho pay tribute to those creators who have so greatly enriched this heritage: The Guest Poets.
