Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert A. Heinlein, tells the story of Michael Valentine Smith, the sole survivor of an expedition to Mars, where he is raised by Martians. Upon returning to Earth as an adult, Michael faces a totally new human world, becoming the centre of political and social intrigue. Published in 1961, the novel challenged the moral and social values of the time, exploring themes such as religion, sexuality, freedom and identity. The work quickly gained a following, not only among science fiction fans, but also among university audiences, becoming an icon of 1960s’ counterculture. Since then, it has never been out of print, and it is considered a landmark in science fiction literature and social criticism.
