It is commonly thought that freedom in music – particularly in jazz and other genres with an improvisational tradition – should be understood as freedom from, that is, freedom in relation to certain conventional structures (harmonic, rhythmic, etc.). Going against this dominant trend, the composer and pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva has been one of the leading contemporary proponents of an alternative conception of freedom: a freedom to, that is, to choose in the moment what to play, with no restrictions beyond the characteristics and experiences of the musicians involved. Esteves da Silva thus regards improvisation as true real-time composition, a practice he has continued to refine over the years, as can be heard on albums such as Scapegrace (2009), So Soft Yet (2011), Brightbird (2017) and The River (2023). It is in this context that he now presents a new trio, featuring the American double bassist Thomas Morgan and the Catalan drummer Jorge Rossy, through which he promises to take his conception of musical freedom even further: dispensing with any pre-arranged setlists, each performance will begin without a safety net, but it may either remain that way or, at any moment, incorporate predetermined material drawn from a shared repertoire.
